Congress, Don't Take Funding From Students In Need

All children deserve the chance at excellent education, no matter their school district. But thanks to the proposed federal "State and Local Funding Flexibility Act", local officials could soon take money from the schools that need it most.

The Flexibility Act would let school districts spend money meant for impoverished children on almost any educational purpose they choose. This means that rich, politically powerful schools would continue to flourish, leaving underprivileged students with even fewer resources.

According to the President of the National Education Association, the bill would imperil the future of nearly 29 million economically disadvantaged students; in turn, they would be more likely to be unemployed, live in poverty, and rely on public funding programs to survive.

The focus of education reform should be to close the achievement gap, not to further harm already vulnerable students. Tell Congress to reject the State and Local Funding Flexibility Act today!
I am writing to urge you to reject the State and Local Funding Flexibility Act. By allowing local officials to divert funding meant for underprivileged children, the act would further the achievement gap that is already crippling education in this country.

Education reform should focus on equality for all students, not harming already vulnerable students. Students who do not finish school are more likely to be unemployed, live in poverty, and rely on public support programs. Therefore, the Flexibility Act would almost certainly engender further societal inequality in the long term.

The Flexibility Act would give politically advantaged schools the excuse to sap funding from students who truly need it. Please reject the State and Local Funding Flexibility Act.
