Make-Over the Child Nutrition Act

Around 31 million American children eat a school lunch every day, and almost one-fifth of kids in the U.S. are obese. If kids are being served hormone-riddled milk products, fruit cups filled with high-fructose corn syrup, and soggy, lackluster veggies, it's no wonder they're unhealthy!

The Child Nutrition Act, up for reauthorization this year, is the major influence behind what our kids are served for lunch at school. A serious overhaul of this act could have major benefits for improving the health of American children.

These meals are often the main, or only, source of nutrients for kids -- especially those from lower-income families. They also teach children about what "good" food is, and what constitutes a balanced meal. The University of Michigan reports that kids who get lunch from their school have higher LDL (bad) cholesterol and eat twice as many fatty meats and sugary drinks compared with kids who bring lunch from home.

Tell Congress that, when the Child Nutrition Act is reauthorized, we want fresh produce, healthy and lean protein, and whole grains to power our kids through school and reduce the rates of childhood obesity and obesity-related diseases. Make an investment in the health of America's kids: give the Child Nutrition Act a healthy make-over!

Dear Congress member,
