Save the Krishna River from Big Oil

The Krishna River is the third largest river in India, supplying as much as a third of the adjacent states' clean drinking water. This river is a source of prosperity for Indian agriculture and urbanization alike.

It's been known for years that natural gas lies beneath the river in the Krishna Basin. It has been left untouched purposefully, due to the poisonous impact that its extraction would have on the forests, wildlife, farmers and local citizens.

Yet the Ministry of Environment and Forests has given a "green signal" to Oil India Ltd. for oil exploration in the Krishna Basin.

This development hardly made major news channels due to its non-commercial nature, but the threat is mounting. Oil India is free to prospect up to 511 sq kilometers of pristine land, threatening the great Krishna River's viability as a clean water source.

Write to the Ministry and voice your opposition to the desecration of one of India's most valuable river basin!
Dear Smt. Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests,

I am writing to oppose your approval of Oil India's exploration for oil in the Krishna Basin.

It's been known for years that natural gas lies beneath the river in the Krishna Basin, so this prospecting is both needless and dangerous. Oil India wouldn't waste time and money prospecting if it didn't plan to extract oil in the future. This would be an environmental disaster for the may citizens who rely on the river as a source of clean water for drinking and farming.

It's been ten years since the natural gas was discovered. We didn't want to poison our rivers then, and we certainly do not now. Please do not allow Oil India to prospect the Krishna Basin. Thank you for consideration.

Sincerely,
