Air pollution is the main environmental threat to public health in the UK and has a clear impact on our NHS. Breathing dirty air increases all our risk of developing lung disease and cardiovascular disease.
Children are particularly at risk, with those who grow up in highly polluted areas four times more likely to have reduced lung function in adulthood.
As we start to recover from COVID-19, it is crucial that we build a resilient and healthy country. We have seen lower levels of air pollution over this time due to decreases in transport use. It is crucial that we keep pollution levels down as people start to return to normal life. One of the ways the government can ensure we do this is by enshrining the WHO's guideline for PM2.5 into law via the Environment Bill. At the moment the Bill falls short, and merely commits to setting a new PM2.5 target by 2022, without specifying what that target will be. At the moment, our legal limit for PM2.5 is twice as high as what the WHO recommends.
Please will you write to the Minister responsible for air quality, Rebecca Pow MP, and ask her to support changes that will bring the target for PM2.5, one of the most harmful pollutants to human health, in to line with the WHO's guidelines?
We cannot miss this opportunity to set an ambitious target for PM2.5 that will drive action across government to clean up the air we breathe. Please will you support a stronger Environment Bill today?
