Demand Investigation into Shell Oil's Role in Nigeria Human Rights Abuses!

In the 1990s, oil multinational Shell worked hand in hand with Nigeria’s military government to brutally repress activists opposed to the environmental dangers and general exploitation presented by Shell’s operations in Ogoniland.

While Shell’s collusion with the horrific human rights violations at this time are not news, Amnesty International recently conducted an exhaustive review of various documents and accounts from this period revealing how deep Shell’s involvement was.

With Shell’s encouragement, more than thousands were murdered, raped and tortured. Many villages were decimated, leaving 30,000 homeless.

Amnesty International believes there is now strong evidence to prove that Shell did more than merely offer encouragement. The oil giant provided logistical support, finances and even directly oversaw portions of Nigeria’s ruthless security forces for its own financial gain.

It is long overdue for the nations involved – Nigeria and, as Shell is a multinational based out of both, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands – to conduct criminal investigations and seek prosecution against the company and the individuals who were in decision-making positions when these crimes were committed.
