The Amazon is Being Deforested at an Alarming Rate So That People in the U.S. Can Have Leather in Their Cars.

Most environmentalists are familiar with some of the consequences of the United States' obsession with cars -- the greenhouse gas emissions, the traffic, and the pollution in our communities. But not many realize that the high demand for luxury SUVs to have leather seats is also destroying one of the most important ecosystems on earth. Lear -- the seat maker for Ford, GM, Volkswagen, Cadillac, and many other car companies -- is the single largest American importer of leather and hides from Brazil. This leather often comes directly from cattle raised on deforested land.

Sign now to protect the precious Amazon and demand that Lear stop using leather in their car seats!

These cars do not need real leather. Lear can and should invest in developing sustainable, faux leather technology that has a lower environmental impact. The impact of vegan-leather production can be as much as a third lower than real leather's environmental consequences. On top of that, many companies are exploring making vegan leather from abundant plant-based sources such as mushrooms, corn, apples, and even coffee grounds. This means that not only can we eliminate the animal harm and deforestation from the equation -- Lear also doesn't need to rely on plastic when they make their leather alternative seats, either.

We must demand that this company invest in sustainable, faux leather for their vehicles now! Protect the world's largest rainforest and the many species that call it home!

Sign the petition and join us in telling Lear that there is no excuse for continuing to use products that contribute to deforestation of the Amazon.
