Tell PM Trudeau: No consent, no Kinder Morgan pipeline

The Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline and tankers project is pushing ahead, in the face of ongoing legal challenges and strong opposition from Indigenous nations, local governments and community members. The project carries heavy environmental, legal and financial risks, and several Indigenous nations whose territories are affected have banned Trans Mountain under their Indigenous laws.

Despite all this, Canada's federal government continues to support the risky tar sands project.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has claimed he will keep Canada's commitment to uphold the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), which means obtaining free, prior and informed consent from Indigenous communities before permitting projects that affect their lands and waters. The government has also promised to reduce Canada's greenhouse gas emissions to meet Paris Agreement climate targets - and building new tar sands pipelines is no way to tackle climate change.

So why is the government allowing Trans Mountain to forge ahead, without Indigenous consent and despite its climate impacts?

Canada cannot back down from its commitments to Indigenous peoples and the global climate. Tell Prime Minister Trudeau: If Canada is serious about reconciliation and climate action, the Trans Mountain pipeline and tankers project can't be forced without consent.
