Protect Our Forests: Say No to Enviva's Wood Pellet Mill

  • by: Dogwood Alliance
  • recipient: North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper & N.C. Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Michael S. Regan

Stand up for forests, climate and environmental justice with the Concerned Citizens of Richmond County to stop Enviva from building another dirty biomass wood pellet facility in North Carolina.

Despite being denied an adequate comment period on the plant for years, the input from citizens in Richmond County is clear: they don't want this mill in their community. The mill will pollute their community, accelerate climate change and destroy over 50 acres of forests in North and South Carolina every day to make wood pellets used to produce electricity in Europe.

We must start putting the health and well-being of our most vulnerable communities ahead of climate polluters like Enviva. Send your message to the government of North Carolina today! Rise up with Richmond County and say "NO!" to Enviva and the biomass wood pellet industry.

Subject: Rescind the Enviva Richmond County Wood Pellet Mill Air Permit Now

Dear [Decision Maker],

I want to thank you for your recent commitment to ensure North Carolina's leadership on climate change. Your pledge to uphold the Paris Climate Accord stands in stark contrast to your predecessor who put the interests of polluters above the interests of North Carolina citizens. I am writing because I am concerned about the climate, forest and community health impacts of a proposed new Enviva wood pellet mill in North Carolina.

I urge you to stop the expansion of the destructive dirty wood pellet export industry in the state of North Carolina. As a first step, I ask you to revoke the permit for the proposed Enviva mill in Richmond County for failure to provide adequate opportunity for the affected community to comment.

Despite being denied an adequate comment period on the plant for years, the input from citizens in Richmond County is clear: they don't want this mill in their community.

North Carolina's former governor opened the floodgates to the wood pellet export industry, which is tearing down our special forests to make wood pellets for export to Europe where they are burned in power stations to generate electricity. As with other dirty fuel industries, the wood pellet industry disproportionately impacts our most vulnerable, including low-income and communities of color.

Enviva, the world's largest wood pellet exporter, already operates three mills in North Carolina. These mills have been the subject of mounting scientific and community evidence documenting that wood pellets are bad for the climate and a dirty and destructive fuel. The proposed new Enviva mill would be located in Richmond County, NC, and is expected to source wood from hardwood forests in North and South Carolina for manufacturing wood pellets for export to Europe to generate electricity.

The air permit issued under the last administration violates air quality regulations and the citizens in the affected community were not given proper notice or opportunity to comment. This community is already dealing with pollution and environmental injustice due to other polluting industries. Neither the local citizens, nor the state of NC needs another wood pellet mill.

In addition to clean energy we must put the protection of our forests and the health, safety and prosperity of our most vulnerable communities at the forefront of North Carolina's climate agenda.
