Climate change is one of the greatest problems facing our planet and fossil fuels are a major contributor to this problem.
Your bank has a unique opportunity to be part of the solution by shifting your loans and investments out of fossil fuels and into clean, renewable energy. At present, the finance provided by your bank to renewables is still a fraction of the finance provided to dirty fossil fuels.
In December 2015, 191 countries signed a historic agreement in Paris to limit global temperature rises to below 2 degrees. Large global banks now have a key role to play in implementing this agreement.
In line with the Paris Agreement, your bank must draw up a plan for a big shift out of fossil fuels altogether.
Specifically, I call on your bank to:
- fully disclose its carbon footprint by requiring your clients (including fossil fuel and power companies) to provide information about the carbon emissions from their operations
- publish a clear, timebound plan to phase out finance of fossil fuels altogether and significantly increase finance to renewables.
It is finance that keeps economies afloat and it is finance that will either lock us into a high-carbon world with runaway climate change or propel our economy to a low-carbon footing and secure a brighter future for all of us.
