Bizarrely, the Golden Globes have placed the film Get Out in its "Comedy" category. This is apparently because the Globes felt there was some satire involved. But actually, the film is a horror/drama and includes social commentary about the very real and painful racial microagressions facing Black people in this country. For the Globes to put such a film in the "comedy" category is absurd. Sign now to demand the Golden Globes put this incredible film in the Drama category where it belongs.
'Get Out' is an incredibly well-done commentary on what it's like to be black in this country, and the paranoia and victimization that goes along with that experience. It so clearly demonstrates the subtle or not-so-subtle things many white people do and say that are aggressive, demeaning or downright dangerous to Black people. This was a beautiful movie and the categorization of it as a comedy diminishes the thrill it packed throughout.
Director Jordan Peele responded in the best way. He tweeted "‘Get Out’ is a documentary.
" This speaks to his purpose and earnest feelings on the topic and the Golden Globes should take that seriously. Yes, there are funny moments in the film. But it is very clear the commentary is not meant to be so light-hearted. The ultimate story is about white people stealing the life from black people - nothing about that is funny.Sign to urge the Golden Globes to correct their mistake immediately.
