Tell EPA: Do Your Job!

We're now in the final and most important phase of the Bay clean-up effort, and while we've made considerable progress, much work remains to fully implement the Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint, especially in Pennsylvania.

The lack of leadership from Pennsylvania's elected officials to adequately invest in clean water efforts threatens to derail our collective efforts to restore and protect the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers now and for generations to come. This is unacceptable.

EPA must use its authority under the Clean Water Act to hold the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania accountable. Send a message right now to EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler urging that EPA assert its leadership in the Bay clean-up effort. Pennsylvania's government must be held accountable to the clean water goals it committed to.

The health of our region's environment, our way of life, and nearly $130 billion in natural benefits annually, are at stake. Take action now.

Your voice will have the greatest impact if you write to EPA in your own words. Leave a comment describing the value of clean water to you and your community.

To be clear: We are faulting Pennsylvania's lack of leadership and investments in clean water efforts for the Commonwealth's failures—not the farmers, local and state agencies, and other conservation groups that work tirelessly to improve Pennsylvania's water quality.
I am alarmed by the failure, to date, in achieving the pollution-reduction targets of the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL).

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, specifically the legislative and executive branch, is largely responsible for this failure.

What's more, the Commonwealth's draft Phase III Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP) self-identified an annual funding shortfall of more than $320 million. The result will be a continuation of impaired waters in Pennsylvania and, due to the impacts of climate change, an erosion of the progress that has been made to save the Bay.

As the federal leader of the Bay clean-up effort, you are responsible for directing and implementing the much-heralded multi-state/federal partnership to restore the Bay. You are accountable to the 18 million of us who call the Bay region home and ensuring we have clean water for all. Please ensure that all Bay restoration partners, especially Pennsylvania, are held accountable to their clean water obligations. If these commitments are not met, consequences must be imposed.

The Chesapeake Bay is a national treasure, critical to our health, economy, and way of life across this region. Please ensure that its restoration continues in full force.

Sincerely,
