The real cost of the Site C Dam

British Columbians are outraged about what's happening at the Site C Dam. Construction has been riddled with problems, but the latest concern threatens the future of the entire project.

Recently, significant problems with the foundation have been reported — pushing the budget and project deadline into the unknown. And to make matters worse, BC tax dollars are being thrown into this financial sinkhole.

Costs have ballooned out of control from $3.5 to $12 billion. And now there's no end in sight. The BC NDP has forged ahead blindly, ignoring evidence from the independent utilities commission report that gave them the opportunity to cancel the project.

This project was justified on the basis of "clean energy" and projected energy needs. However, both justifications are false.

Researchers across Canada have criticised the Site C Dam for its devastating environmental impacts. Constructing the dam is releasing significant amounts of greenhouse gases. And the dam will flood the Peace River Valley, forcing people from their homes and violating Indiginous Treaty Rights, destroying rich farmland, and submerging the habitat of 100 endangered species.

Most damning of all, independent experts say there's no demand for the Site C Dam. Renewable energy like solar, wind, and run-of-river is more than capable of meeting the projected needs of British Columbians — at a fraction of the cost. Some critics speculate that the project is really being built to provide energy for companies who are fracking for natural gas.

The BC Liberals got us into this mess and the BC NDP has betrayed our trust by pushing ahead with construction.

Now that the literal foundation of this project appears to be unstable, we must act. We need to halt construction until an independent review reveals the full extent of the structural problems and if they can be remedied at all.

The BC Greens are standing up for British Columbians by demanding we immediately shut down construction at the Site C Dam.
