We need to take urgent action to stop Australia from becoming a dumping ground for polluting, fossil fuel cars that no longer have a market in more EV-friendly countries.
Australia is already falling behind in electrified transport and yet, while 17 other countries have already legislated eventually banning fuel cars, Australia would be the first place in the world to apply this type of tax to electric vehicles!
And right now, states across Australia are considering taxing Electric Vehicles (EVs) because they DON'T burn fuel! Legislation is already proposed in South Australia, and the idea is on the table in WA, QLD, NSW, VIC and Tassie to tax EVs who don't pay the existing fuel excise tax.
With only around 20,000 EVs currently in Australia this tax will be a drop in water for the revenue of States, but will discourage our fledgling EV industry with an extra cost for buyers and signal to global EV suppliers there's no market for their cars in Australia.
With transport emissions one of the largest and fastest growing sources of pollution in Australia now, more than ever, we need to be supporting our EV industry.
