Tell Maryland Lawmakers It's Time to Switch from Dirty Coal to Clean Energy!

Coal pollution and dust scattering over Baltimore's beautiful horizon "should be a wake-up call" to Maryland residents and elected officials. Maryland residents endure some of the worst air quality in the country, with the majority of the state not meeting the nation's standards for safe air. Baltimore in particular has the highest rates of asthma in the state, surpassing national averages.

Every person has the right to clean air, and a healthy, sustainable environment. Yet many Marylanders don't realize that they have a choice to make a difference by going solar. The switch to pollution-free, non-exploding, sustainable forms of energy--- like 100% clean, renewable, sun-harvested solar power is now available in their region.

Right now, Maryland ranks 18th in the nation for installing solar. There's no rooftop required with clean energy options like community solar, which allows renters and homeowners alike to access power from local solar farms while enjoying savings on their electricity bill. With every person who joins a solar farm, switches to renewable energy, or gets panels for their home, we build a solar-powered Maryland.

Pledge to do your part, by checking out pollution-free energy options for your home, while spreading the word amongst family and neighbors. Let's raise our voices together --  demand that state officials speed Maryland's shift to renewable energy sources.

Dear Maryland House Environment and Transportation Committee,

We're writing to request your leadership in creating a safe and prosperous Maryland, powered by pollution-free renewable energy sources like solar power. For the well-being of our communities and the health of our children, it's critical we shift Maryland to renewable energy sources. We, the undersigned, pledge to do our part, but to truly tackle Maryland's health and environmental challenges we need your leadership in action.

A January 2022 Baltimore Sun editorial makes the fate of coal clear: "the future is not in this highly polluting 19th century energy technology." But right now, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, Maryland ranks 18th in the nation for solar. Instead of powering the state by burning dirty fuel sources like coal that risk ours and our children's health and future, we need you to support policies for a safe and healthy future that:

  • Reduce harmful air pollutants from burning dirty fuel;

  • Hold polluters responsible for damage caused; and

  • Put most affected frontline communities first.

Efforts to accelerate this turning point for Maryland are a start, like increasing the renewable portfolio standards and investing in climate justice communities. However, now more than ever, the life-saving, economic-revitalizing, and community-thriving benefits of renewable energy are clear — and simply too important to ignore. We will be voting on July 19 and November 18 for state and county officials who will invest in a clean energy future for all.

The time to act is now. We must put Maryland ahead of the curve and lead the charge towards the energy of the future, to ensure a better tomorrow. We urge you to seize the moment to protect our communities and kids.
