Say no to Netflix's sweet deal!

Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly's September 28 digital culture announcement could have been written by Netflix executives.

The centrepiece is a deal with Netflix to produce content in Canada, without any details on whether these productions would tell Canadian stories, follow Canadian rules, or even increase the streaming giant's spending in our country.

Joly failed utterly to address the unfair advantage that Netflix has over its Canadian competitors that are required to collect and remit sales tax to the government and to support the production of Canadian stories.

What Joly did not mention during her announcement is the series of meetings she had with Netflix lobbyists in the preceding months.

No wonder Canada got the short end in this deal!

We've got to take action to counter these powerful lobbyists and their friends in Ottawa.
