Help Stop Horse Slaughter by Supporting the SAFE Act
Each year, thousands of American equines -- working, racing and companion horses, donkeys, mules and even children's ponies -- are horrifically slaughtered for human consumption. They are inhumanely transported long distances across our borders, in cramped trailers without food, water or rest.
They are then brutally killed, and their meat is shipped overseas. Sadly, the vast majority of the equines who become victims of this predatory and deceptive industry are young, healthy animals who could have led productive lives with loving owners if they'd been given the chance.
The last horse slaughter plants in the U.S. closed years ago, and Congress has consistently voted to keep them shuttered by prohibiting funding for horse slaughter inspections within U.S. borders. Unfortunately, this prohibition does not prevent the inhumane transport of American equines to other countries for slaughter for human consumption.
Congress must act to completely end this terrible cruelty once and for all. The Save America's Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, H.R. 3475, would permanently ban domestic horse slaughter in the U.S. and stop the export of American horses for slaughter abroad -- practices that 80% of Americans support banning.
This vital legislation is needed to fully protect our horses from ending up on foreign dinner plates. Horses have stood by us as our loyal companions throughout history, and we owe it to them to protect them from abuse.
Please cosponsor the Save America's Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, H.R. 3475, and do all that you can to push for the passage of this important bill. I and 80% of Americans are against the cruel slaughter of American horses for human consumption.
Horse slaughter is unnecessary and inhumane. Many horses suffer terrible injuries during long-distance transport in cramped trailers without food, water or rest. At the slaughter plant, horses rarely experience quick, painless deaths due to their anatomy and instinctual flight response to danger. Furthermore, this issue is a threat to consumers, since known "kill buyers" pose as horse dealers and rescues, thus tricking responsible horse owners into selling their horses into the slaughter pipeline. Please cosponsor the Save America's Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, H.R. 3475, and do all that you can to push for the passage of this important bill.
