The pandemic revealed how critical high-speed internet is to keeping our economy moving, our kids educated, and our families connected. Yet millions of Americans in rural areas have no access to broadband internet. Countless others can't afford it. And for those who can, many pay way too much for bad service — frozen Zoom calls and buffered Netflix, anyone?
But we have the opportunity right now to get better internet service! A plan is on the table in Congress that would finally deal with our nation's lack of widespread and affordable broadband internet service.
The Accessible, Affordable Internet for All Act would hold giant internet companies like Comcast, Spectrum, Cox and Verizon accountable by requiring them to be crystal clear on pricing, fees and speeds before customers sign a contract.
And it would free cities and towns from restrictive laws that prevent them from building their own broadband networks — giving us all much-needed choice, better service, and lower-priced options.
Of course, some giant internet providers are against this idea. It would mean more competition, transparency, and accountability.
