Trump Allegedly Pressured FIFA. The World Cup Should Never Be for Sale.

The World Cup is supposed to unite the world. No matter what country you come from, every team should compete under the same rules, with the same opportunities, and the same consequences. But recent reports suggest politics may have taken the field. According to multiple reports, President Donald Trump personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino after U.S. player Folarin Balogun received a red card and automatic suspension.

Senior administration officials also reportedly worked with lawyers to help overturn the suspension, despite longstanding FIFA rules that generally do not allow such appeals during the tournament. Days later, FIFA reversed the suspension.

Sign the petition urging FIFA to investigate political interference in its disciplinary process and adopt stronger safeguards to keep the World Cup fair for everyone.

The decision was extraordinary. Reports indicate it was the first time since 1962 that a player was permitted to compete in a World Cup match after receiving a red card that would ordinarily trigger a suspension. Whether or not Balogun deserved to play is no longer the biggest issue. The real question is whether powerful political figures can influence decisions that should remain completely independent.

If fans begin to believe that phone calls from presidents matter more than the rulebook, confidence in the integrity of the World Cup will quickly disappear.

FIFA should launch an independent ethics investigation into this matter, publicly disclose whether any outside political pressure influenced its decision-making, and adopt stronger safeguards that prohibit political interference in disciplinary cases. Every nation, regardless of its size or influence, must be treated equally under the rules.

Sign the petition now to urge FIFA to investigate these allegations, strengthen its political independence, and ensure every World Cup match is decided by the players on the field, not by influence behind closed doors.
