Call on banks to better protect their customers

Supporters of our 'Safeguard us from scams' campaign have been sharing their scam experiences with us. While no scam story is quite the same, the effects on the victim can be devastating.

Supporter John told us of the devious scam that left him feeling vulnerable, to the point where he thinks he now can’t trust anyone.

John had been called by a man who said he worked for John's phone and internet provider, and that a scam would affect John's internet access if he didn't act. Worried he wouldn't be able to pay his bills, John allowed the man to remotely access his computer. He thought that because he wasn't sharing any passwords, everything would be fine.

Soon John began to suspect things weren’t right. He checked his bank account and saw the fraudster had already taken £1,200.

When he contacted his bank, it told him it had been aware of a scam like this. John felt shocked that more hadn't been done by the bank to protect him. The stress from the event left John in hospital with chest pains.

Our campaign is calling on banks to better protect their customers who are tricked into transferring money to a fraudster. We want victims of bank transfer scams to have a legal right to get their money back.

Don’t let the fraudsters get away with it - sign our petition now.
