Demand the IWC stands firm against Japan’s attempts to continue whaling.

Japan has signalled that it may attempt to get around the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling to halt the killing of whales, in spite of saying that it will abide by the verdict.

Japan may try to rescue its Antarctic whaling program by reducing its quota of whale kills after the ICJ ordered a halt to the program, finding it was not scientific as claimed – but mainly for human consumption.

Japan may submit a revamped research whaling program for approval by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), which oversees international management of whales.

Japan signed a 1986 ban on whaling - but has continued to hunt minke, fin and humpback whales in the Southern Ocean every year, citing a 1946 treaty that permits killing whales for research. Nonetheless, the ICJ ruled that the scientific research resulting from Antarctic whaling did not justify the number of whales killed.

Demand that the IWC stands firm and rejects any revamped plan from the Japanese to continue killing whales. Please sign the petition and share it with friends.

Update #3vor 9 Jahren
Japan is seeking international support for its plans to hunt minke whales in the Antarctic Ocean next year by scaling down the whaling research program the U.N. top court rejected earlier this year.

Japan is working on a revised program to be submitted to the IWC in November. Please share the petition to demand the IWC stands firm against Japan.
Update #2vor 9 Jahren
Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told parliament Monday he would boost his efforts toward restarting commercial whaling, despite the ICJ ruling. “I want to aim for the resumption of commercial whaling by conducting whaling research in order to obtain scientific data indispensable for the management of whale resources,” he said. “It is regrettable that this part of Japanese culture is not understood,” he added.
Update #1vor 10 Jahren
UPDATE: Japan announced on Friday that it would pull together a new proposal for its Antarctic whaling by later this year.

The government also said that it will carry out its annual Northwest Pacific whale hunt despite the International Court of Justice ruling against its whaling program last month, though on a smaller scale.

Please share this petition to help send a clear message to the IWC that the world demands it stands firm against Japan’s attempts to continue whaling.
