Demand a rethink on budget cuts by city council which affect vulnerable adults in Newcastle

An excellent scheme which assisted vulnerable adults including the elderly to stay in their own homes by sourcing workmen for simple jobs and offering a trades register for larger jobs, called Mears, has had its budget removed. This threatens the ability of recipients to remain in their own homes and cope with problems.

Petition Newcastle Council whose cuts threaten the ability of the elderly to stay in their own homes when repairs are needed. Mears provided handymen for small jobs and a trades register for larger ones. All were excellent workers at reasonable cost. Their yearly budget has been completely removed. Several neighbour's and friends in their 80s and 90 s have used this service and now don't know where to find help when needed.

The petition will be handed in to the council towards the end of next week as the consultation period for budget finishes on January 31 st. Most people I have approached for signatures have responded willingly but we still need a great deal more before the petition can carry any weight. Please do all you can to help by sharing, and approaching your friends, neighbours and acquaintances for signatures. The service is too important to lose without a fight.
