Italy: say YES to same-sex unions and equal family rights!

Italy is the only country in western Europe that does not legally recognise same-sex unions. Now a bill is being debated in the Italian Senate to determine what rights will be granted to same-sex couples. Please sign this petition to let the Italian Senate know that it's time for Italy to update its laws and allow same-sex couples equal rights.

Last year, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Italy had violated human rights by failing to offer enough legal protection for same-sex couples. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has long promised to address the issue. 

Tens of thousands of people recently took to the streets of cities across Italy to demand that same-sex partnerships be legally recognised. They simply want same-sex couples to be able to enjoy the same securities as any other couple.

The Monica Cirinnà bill currently being debated in the Senate would be a significant step towards equality. Yet there is danger of it being watered down. Notably, the right for same-sex parents to adopt their stepchildren hangs in the balance. The happiness and security of countless children and their parents should take precedence over outdated views and prejudice.

Public pressure will help make it clear to the Italian Senate that this issue needs addressing, and that the time has come for Italy to embrace same-sex couples and families by offering them legal recognition and support.
