Turtle Eggs Are Being Stolen From Endangered Sea Turtle Nests

Endangered olive ridley sea turtles are coming ashore to lay their eggs only to have those eggs stolen before they ever have a chance to hatch.

At Playa Escobilla, one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in the world, disturbing footage shows individuals looting nests while turtles are actively nesting. This is one of the most vulnerable moments in a sea turtle's life cycle and it's being exploited.

This isn't just cruel, it's illegal. Under Mexican law, sea turtles and their eggs are fully protected. Taking them is a serious crime that can result in fines and prison time. These protections exist for a reason: sea turtle populations are already under threat, and every stolen egg is a life that may never reach the ocean.

When nests are disturbed at this stage, it doesn't just harm individual turtles, it threatens the future of the entire population. And yet, this is happening in a sanctuary that is supposed to be safe.

If poachers can break the law so openly in one of the world's most important nesting sites, what does that say about enforcement, and what happens next if nothing changes?

Sign the petition now to demand that PROFEPA investigate this incident, identify those responsible, and strengthen protections to stop this from happening again.
