Support for marriage equality has been growing in Australia. Earlier in 2016, Attorney-General George Brandis introduced a Bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in the country.
The Marriage Amendment Bill would change the current definition of marriage from between "man and woman" to "two people." It would also recognize existing foreign same-sex marriages.
The Bill's current language allows ministers and civil celebrants to discriminate against same-sex couples on the basis of religious or personal beliefs against homosexuality. The Bill should be edited to omit discrimination against same-sex couples.
All couples should be granted the right to marry the person they love, as long as both members of the couple are consenting adults. The United States legalized same sex marriage in June 2015. It is time for Australia to stand up for progress and equality for LGBTI people and their relationships. Please sign the petition to urge the Australian Senate to pass legislation that supports marriage equality!
