Tell Big Oil to Clean Up Its Act

The results of a recently-released investigation on the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster are unnerving: they reveal multiple missteps and safety lapses in the oil industry -- the entire oil industry -- that could lead to another catastrophe.

The Deepwater Horizon oil disaster devastated the Gulf Coast's economy and killed 11 workers as well as countless animals, like threatened and endangered sea turtles, brown pelicans and dolphins. The deadly spill devastated all walks of life -- people, plants, and wildlife.

Congress hasn't yet acted in response to the Deepwater Horizon spill. To prevent another disaster, we must hold the industry accountable for these missteps and hazards and make sure they are corrected.

Tell Congress to ensure Big Oil operates in the interest of the American people by fixing the dangerous hazards found in this report and accepts full liability for its mistakes.
As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, a constituent and someone who cares about our environment, I strongly encourage you to do everything in your power to pass legislation to improve offshore drilling safety and prevent future oil spills.

On January 11, 2011, the "Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling" presented the results of its comprehensive, nonpartisan investigation of the worst environmental disaster in American history revealing systemic and industry-wide missteps and safety lapses that could lead to another catastrophe.

The commission's well-researched findings chronicle the shortcuts and flawed drilling industry practices that led to the BP Deepwater Horizon Gulf oil disaster... and even now threaten other coasts.

A report cannot, by itself, protect America's shorelines and regional economies from a repeat of the same disaster.

Congress must now take legislative action to deal with the persistent environmental and economic impacts of the tragic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and chart a responsible path focused on alternatives to oil to keep America's coasts and natural treasures safe.
