Urge your Colorado legislators to regulate Big Tech’s data centers
This past legislative session, Colorado legislators failed to pass legislation to regulate Big Tech data centers and protect hardworking Coloradans from higher energy bills and other harmful impacts of data center development.
Take action to stop your energy bills from going up by contacting your legislator and asking them to make sure Colorado regulates Big Tech's data centers.
I'm writing to ask you to support legislation in the next legislative session that will protect Coloradans from higher energy bills and other harmful community impacts that come with data center development.
Energy bills are going up across Colorado and data centers will make the problem worse without fair protections for utility customers. Hardworking families and small businesses should not pay higher electricity bills, so that utilities and wealthy tech billionaires can profit.
Without guardrails, new data centers will lead to the construction of new power plants and transmission lines, which will increase the electricity rates paid by all Coloradans while only benefitting Big Tech companies. Across the country, energy bills are rising at twice the rate of inflation and Coloradans can't afford the burden of additional rate increases caused by data centers. Even Xcel Energy recently proposed a 10% increase to Coloradans' electricity bills.
Regulating data center development is not just about energy costs, though. Hardworking Coloradans also can't afford the loss of jobs that will come with widespread AI adoption. The current push by Big Tech companies to quickly build as many data centers as possible is intended to lead to job losses across numerous industries and an unemployment crisis. It's time for our state legislators to regulate data centers before it's too late.
