Keep Nuclear Waste Out of the Great Lakes: Tell Federal Environment Minister To Recommend Against Lake Huron Nuclear Waste Plan

  • av: Amelia Meister
  • mottagare: Federal Environment Minister, Catherine McKenna

Imagine 200,000 tonnes of nuclear waste under one of the largest bodies of fresh water in the world. This is the plan for Lake Huron, where the Canadian government is looking at a plan to store waste from the nuclear power generation plant in the area.

The plan would bury hundreds of thousands of tonnes of nuclear waste in a bunker under the lake. Burying nuclear waste is not a solution. It is only a matter of time before it leaks. Not only that, but the proposed area for the project is the traditional territory of the Saugeen Ojibway First Nation who have not been consulted with nor consented to the project.

The federal government plans on making a recommendation for the project fall 2017. We must make our voices loud enough before then to stop the project!

Sign today to protect one of the largest fresh water bodies in the world. By signing today you are helping to guarantee fresh water for future generations.

To Catherine McKenna,

As a person who cares deeply for the environment I am gravely concerned by the recent proposal to bury 200,000 tonnes of nuclear waste under Lake Huron.

This proposal is a bad idea for future generations. The possibility of the bunker leaking is too much of a risk for radioactive pollution in one of the largest fresh water bodies in the world.

On top of this the proposed site is on the traditional territory of the Saugeen Objiway First Nation who have not given consent for the project, which is against federal law.

When the federal government gives their recommendation for the project this fall you must deny the project and recommend against it going through.
