Congress: The People In the Path of Keystone XL Aren't Bargaining Chips

My name is Jim, and every morning I wake up to a very real threat.

It's called Keystone XL and it's the oil pipeline that TransCanada -- the massive Canadian conglomerate -- is lobbying hard to build through America's heartland.

TransCanada offered me $244,000 to let them build their pipeline through my family's land in Polk County, Nebraska next to the Platte River and I declined. My children will never inherit that money, because like five generations before me, my children need to inherit this earth.

This week, the threat of Keystone XL became more real when Republicans moved to marry a vote on the Pipeline to the upcoming debt ceiling vote. They're turning lawmaking into a hostage taking and using the people in the path as bargaining chips.

This poisonous pipeline is not good for America. It benefits only TransCanada, its investors, and the companies that will use it to export oil to countries like China. It will put the backyard my grandchildren play in directly in the path of a dangerous experiment.

Please sign my petition asking Congress to take a clean vote on the debt ceiling -- and leave Keystone out of it.
Dear [Representative],

TransCanada -- the massive Canadian conglomerate -- is lobbying hard to build the Keystone XL Pipeline through America's heartland. But this poisonous pipeline is not good for America. It benefits only TransCanada, its investors, and the companies that will use it to export oil to countries like China.

Keystone XL would put the backyards our children and our neighbors children play in directly in the path of a dangerous experiment, yet right now some members of Congress are moving to marry a vote on the Pipeline to the upcoming debt ceiling vote.

I value our beautiful land and the fresh, clean, bountiful water that flows beneath it. I hope you’ll stand with me by taking Keystone XL off the bargaining table.

Take a clean vote on the debt ceiling -- and leave Keystone out of it.

Thank you,

[Your name]
