If Florida policymakers remove critical vaccine guidelines for schools or pursue other policies that decrease community accountability for immunizations, they risk triggering an exponential decrease in vaccination rates for a number of preventable diseases, potentially eliminating community immunity and leading to widespread outbreaks.

Many immunocompromised Floridians cannot safely receive certain vaccines or otherwise do not develop immunity even when vaccinated. This vulnerable group includes elderly neighbors, a friend fighting cancer, and a family member's newborn. Their best protection comes from never encountering vaccine-preventable diseases in the first place, which is only possible through strong community immunity.
To maintain community immunity and protect immunocompromised Floridians from life-threatening preventable illnesses, I urge you not to support any policy that would lead to declines in vaccine rates. Any legislative or regulatory policy that discourages or limits access to vaccinations, will drive a generational decrease in vaccination rates and increase the chances of a dangerous outbreak in the state. Widespread vaccine access protects not just individuals' health, but the wellbeing of our entire community—especially those who are at higher risk of complications from these diseases.
