Recently we've endured a senseless government shutdown and neared a calamitous budget default. But what happens in the next few weeks could be even worse for America's seniors.
That's because some Members of Congress are now so desperate to make a deal that they are ready to put almost anything on the table - including big cuts to your Social Security and Medicare.
Congress needs to achieve a sensible budget deal that will bring long-term solvency to our nation so we stop skating from crisis to crisis. But it needs to be a fair, clean budget - not one that uses our benefits as bargaining chips!
Nearly half of all Members of Congress are millionaires. It's easy for them to forget, as they wheel and deal, that most seniors rely on the benefits we worked for and earned all our lives. We can't let them make a deal that leaves seniors out in the cold!
That's why your voice is needed now. Don't let them squeeze your Social Security. Tell Congress you won't accept any budget deal that treats America's seniors as backroom bargaining chips.
We, the Undersigned, support your efforts to reach a long-term budget agreement that will bring solvency to the nation and prevent a financial meltdown.
However, we refuse to accept any deal that cuts the benefits America’s seniors worked for our whole lives, earned and rely on.
Changing the way our COLAs are calculated, raising our premiums or increasing our deductibles and out of pocket expenses may look good on a balance sheet, or sound good as part of a backroom deal. But in the real world they affect our lives.
Seniors aren’t bargaining chips, and we refuse to be treated that way!
We urge you to refuse to give your support to any deal that cuts Social Security and Medicare. We will be studying your voting record with interest to ensure you do not sell seniors out in this fight.
