Tell Rick Perry: Being Gay Isn't a Choice or a Disease

The governor of Texas recently spoke in San Francisco as he tests the water for another presidential run in 2016. While addressing the audience he compared being gay to being an alcoholic.

"I may have the genetic coding that I'm inclined to be an alcoholic," Perry said, "but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way."

Tell Rick Perry: Being gay isn't a choice or a disease.

The Republicans in the state of Texas recently added a plank to their party platform in support of so-called "reparative therapy" (also known as gay conversion therapy), a discredited and cruel process that falsely asserts you can change an individual's sexual orientation.

Rick Perry needs an accountability moment now. His best funders should be on notice that when they support Rick Perry, they're supporting harmful, anti-gay propaganda.

He may be brazen enough compare being gay to being alcoholic in front of a crowd in San Francisco, but some of his donors may not like being publicly associated with his comments.

Tell Rick Perry: Stop spreading lies about gay people and apologize for your ignorant statements.
To Governor Perry:

It is not acceptable in 2014 for a presidential candidate and governor of one of our largest states to assert that being gay is like a disease or that people have a choice when it comes to their sexual orientation.
