Wealthy Countries Are Responsible for Pakistan's Climate-Related Suffering. Demand Action!

Pakistan is experiencing its worst flooding in history -- one-third of the country is underwater. More than 30 million people have been displaced by the flooding, which has killed over 1,100 people.

The flooding and its extreme impact are largely due to climate change. While the world's wealthiest countries have overwhelmingly caused this environmental disaster, Pakistan contributes less than .5% to global emissions. Since countries like the U.S. are responsible for climate change, they should also bear responsibility for stepping up and helping Pakistan right now.

As time goes on, climate change is only getting worse, not better. We need to interrupt this cycle now if we stand any chance of saving ourselves from even more dramatic climate catastrophes. Wealthy countries have the responsibility to reduce their emissions as close to zero as possible by 2030. That means cutting the use of fossil fuels, which significantly escalates climate change.

The goal of the Paris Agreement was originally to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius -- but we're heading toward over 2.7 degrees. Yet these same nations are only accelerating their use of fossil fuels -- particularly the U.S., the U.K., China, Canada, Australia, and the EU.

"States that have enriched themselves using fossil fuels and other unsustainable practices must meet their international obligations," said Rimmel Mohydin, Amnesty International's Pakistan Campaigner. "They must provide compensation and other forms of remedy for the loss and damage people are suffering in Pakistan." Mohydin is exactly right.

Sign the petition to demand the countries most responsible for climate change cut emissions and compensate Pakistan for the damages and pain it's suffered as a result of climate-induced flooding!
