TransCanada: Drop Your Keystone XL Lawsuit Against the US!

Remember the Keystone XL pipeline project? It was a dangerous plan to transport Canadian tar sands oil across the US and it would have been a disaster for Canadian forests, the climate and US communities alike.

Now TransCanada, the company behind this awful project, is suing President Obama for more than $15 billion because they weren't allowed to build the Keystone XL pipeline last fall. The company claims that this decision violated NAFTA's obligations to treat all investors equally.

The pipeline would have carried more than 800,000 barrels of oil 1,179 miles from Alberta, Canada to Steele City, Nebraska every day. The EPA encouraged President Obama to block the pipeline for various environmental reasons, including risk of oil spillage and development of oil sands.

TransCanada complains, "“[T]he rejection [of the pipeline] was symbolic and based merely on the desire to make the U.S. appear strong on climate change,” Yet the decision is consistent with Obama's pro-environmental agenda.

Please sign the petition to urge TransCanada to put environmental interests over economic gain and drop the Keystone XL lawsuit against the US!

TransCanada:

I am writing to ask you to drop your $15 billion dollar Keystone XL lawsuit against the U.S.

As you know, the decision to block your firm from building the pipeline was not personal, but due to significant environmental concerns, including risk of oil spillage and development of oil sands. The EPA advised President Obama against moving forward with the pipeline for these reasons.

You said in your filing, “[T]he rejection [of the pipeline] was symbolic and based merely on the desire to make the U.S. appear strong on climate change,” Yet the decision is consistent with Obama's pro-environmental agenda.

I respectfully urge you to put environmental interests over economic gain and drop the Keystone XL lawsuit against the US. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider this petition.
