The Kondha people have lived off the land in a thickly forested Niyamgiri hills in Orissa, India for generations. Despite their protected status as an indigenous group and the sacred ecosystem they live in, a major international corporation is pressuring the Indian government to allow mining in the region.

Mining would cause major destruction not only to the Konds' land, but to their very way of life. That's why we're calling on India to protect the land and the people of in the Niyamgiri hills.

The protection of the Niyamgiri hills is still in limbo after years of legal battles. In April 2011 the Indian Supreme Court agreed to hear a challenge to earlier bans on mining.

Urge India to ban mining projects in the Niyamgiri hills.
Dear Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon. Prime Minister of India,

I am writing to respectfully ask that you support the protection of the Niyamgiri hills from mining activities.

For generations, the Kondha people have lived off of the land in the Niyamgiri hills region. Their culture, religious practices and well-being are tied to the mountain and its environmental resources. If this mountain were mined, their very way of life would be destroyed along with the land.
